All About Earwigs

Earwigs are insects of the order Dermaptera. There are roughly 2,000 species of earwig across 12 families; however, only 20 or so are native to the United States. Earwigs range from 2 to 5 millimeters in length depending the species. They are dark- to light-brown in coloration. Earwigs have two small sets of wings, each with a leathery appearance. All earwig species are distinguished by a relatively large set of pincers protruding from their abdomen at the end of their bodies.

Contrary to popular old wives’ tales, earwigs do not burrow inside human ears during the night. They are not venomous, nor particularly aggressive. However, they will use their pincers in defense or to spar with other earwigs. A pinch from an earwig can be quite painful.

There are earwig species found in virtually every corner of the world. Though earwigs can live in most conditions, they prefer cooler, undisturbed areas. Earwigs typically feed on sprouts and decaying vegetation. In the right conditions, they can be serious garden pests. An earwig species are predatory, and all are nocturnal and fast-moving, which can make them difficult to spot both indoors and outdoors.

Causes of Earwig Infestations

Earwig infestations are caused by a coalesce of ideal living conditions. In cool outdoor areas with adequate ground cover, wet soil, and food, earwigs will thrive. Spraying eco-friendly insecticides can curb outdoor earwig populations.

Indoors, earwig infestations occur for a number of reasons. The first is that they are attracted to lights. Porch lights, garage lights, and even light emitted from windows can cause these bugs to congregate near buildings. If the weather gets too hot or too cold, earwigs will invade properties in search of more accommodating conditions. In these cases, they will enter through open doors, windows, or cracks and holes in roofs, walls, or building foundations. Once inside, they prefer dark, cramped areas. To keep them out, try your best not to leave any entrances open, and always plug up any holes and cracks in the exterior of your property — no matter how small.
